  • A click-beetle - uses a trick catch on its back as a self-righting mechanism
  • Larvae are "wireworms" and may damage potato crops, but also feed on rotting wood

  • A 6-8 mm click beetle that is uniformly grey/black in colour and metallic in appearance with a fine covering of hairs.
  • This species was long known as Kibunea minuta (Linnaeus, 1758) but this was transferred to Limonius by Cate (2007). Leseigneur & Mertlik (2007) showed that two closely related species were present differentiated by the male genitalia and all British material has so far proved to be poneli.

  • Size: About 8.5mm long (excluding antennae)
  • This has been identified by an expert as C. cryptica rather than C. pallida on the basis of the visible black tip to the far hind femur.

  • This species with a black scutellum has generally been treated as Cantharis nigra (De Geer) in British literature. However Geiser & Fanti (2015) showed that this is a misapplication. The true C. nigra has a red scutellum.

  • The dark mark on the pronotum may be absent leaving the entire pronotum brown to orange.
  • The black on the orange hind legs extends above the 'knee'.

  • Small (5 to 6 mm) brown beetle with a black head, black thighs and a large black mark on the pronotum.
