Herbs - Chives

Chives grow from bulbs, but I have always bought them in a pot rather than as dry bulbs. They are part of the onion family. I grow them along the path, partly to make it easy to harvest them, but also the flowers are attractive. They flower in May.

To use, cut off leaf or two from a plant. Don't take all the leaves as you want the plant to get energy for next year. The leaves are tubular rather than flat, and they have a mild taste and smell of onion. I use them chopped in a salad, on top of lettuce leaves, for example, or on sliced raw tomatoes. You can also mix them into (or have on top of) soft cheese.
