Mermaids

This is by William J Neatby (1900), and is by Bow Bridge. Mermaids (west of West bridge). It was formerly archway at Leicester Wholesale Market, and re-erected at West Bridge, 1980. One older guide to Leicester I have called it the Great Hole of Leicester!

Making a Place

This was designed by Chloe Cookson and Rory McNally. It is in Bede park (northern end). It represents a rolled up carpet with a map of Leicester painted around it. The third photo is a close-up, which shows that West is at the top of the map, rather than the more usual North.

Stone circle

This is also in Bede park (at the entrance, eastern end).

The Lion Fountain

This is by Francis J Hames (1879). It is in Town Hall Square.

Boer War Memorial

This is by Joseph Crosland McClure. It is also in Town Hall Square.

War

This is in front of Newarke Houses Museum, in The Newarke. You can also see part of one of the two cannons, either side of the entrance, rather terrifyingly pointing towards anyone entering!

Butterflies

This is in front of Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, in New Walk. Do not get Newarke and New Walk mixed up! Quite different place. Both old....

Pavement in the Cultural Centre

The Cultural Centre is round the church of St George. There is some wonderful street art round there, but also some stuff on the pavement. The "Rutland Street" is presumably in Rutland Street. The wiggly lines are in Halford Street, and I think the map is as well. It marks its location on it, but I don't understand the rest of the map! The husband is included for scale...

Market artworks

The archway is Market Place Approach, off Horsefair Street. The column is East Gates, near Cheapside.

Sporting Success

This is by Martin Williams. This is by the junction of Gallowtree Gate and Humberstone Road. The 1998 statue celebrates one of the most successful 12 months in Leicester's sporting history. Leicestershire won the county championship in cricket, rugby stars at Tigers lifted the Pilkington Cup, and Leicester City's footballers won the Coca Cola Cup.

DNA

This is in Humberstone Gate (corner of Fox Lane). Turn the cone at the base of the column and the spirals turn around. Purists might point out that while these are two spirals, they are not the double spiral of DNA, which has the two spirals the same size going the same way, not one inside the other going in opposite directions.

Metal Tree

This is by Hubert Dalwood. It is in Haymarket. It was designed in 1974 to complement the architectural lines of the Haymarket Shopping Centre.

Beacons

This is by Levitate, and is in the middle of Highcross Shopping Centre. The image changes. Since the image is over seven pillars, it makes more sense from some angles than others.

Flowers

This is in Belgrave Gate, by the flyover.
