Plymouth - SaltashClick on a photo for a large version. |
Saltash is close to Plymouth, just the other side of the Tamar (and therefore in Cornwall, not Devon). There is a famous Brunel bridge over the Tamar, which is usually photographed from the train, but there are stunning views from Saltash. There are other things to see as well.
The rail station is naturally at the level of the bridge, which is high above the river. Mary Newman's cottage is also above the level of the river, at 51 Culver Rd. This is a small domestic dwelling from the Tudor age. The cottage was reputedly once the home of Mary Newman the first wife of Sir Francis Drake (although the woman showing us round said this probably wasn't true!). The cottage has been carefully restored by the Tamar Protection Society. A few years ago the garden was re designed and constructed to replicate a 16th century garden, and to add interest for visitors, the garden was created on a slightly grander scheme than the simple garden that would have sustained the original occupants.Herbs, flowers and vegetables of the Tudor period have been combined in raised beds alongside an oak framed arbour which is covered in eglantine briars and Jasmine. Beyond this a small orchard together with a turf covered raised mound has been created. The garden is a peaceful haven with fine views over the Tamar.

We continued to walk down the hill to river level. There is a road bridge as well as the train bridge to admire.
At river level, there is a tiny park, with artworks.
And now to admire the bridges from underneath!
Then we walked up the hill to Saltash itself. That was a steep hill!
This Celtic Cross is on corner of Elwell Woods, on the approach to the Tamar bridges.
