Diamonds uses both knit stitch and purl stitch in the same row. It produces a decoratitive effect.
The diamonds are produced by a number of stitches of smooth (stocking) and knobbly (reverse stocking) which increase or decrease for each row.
As I have mentioned, when you mix blocks of smooth (stocking) and knobbly (reverse stocking), there are odd effects. This pattern seems to produce a coggled effect, which my husband thinks looks like an egg-box! Knitting is more 3D than you would think, and not always predicatable.
The reverse looks different. I'm not sure why! I think the pattern is not symmetrical between the different stitches.
