Machine lace cut to shapeThe two sides are different, with the gimps only showing on one side. The threads run through pattern and net (rather than the pattern being embroidered on top of the net). This looks as if it was made as a bigger shape, then cut to make its current shape. It was originally a straight piece, but had a V-shaped hole cut into the middle and sewn up to make this shape. This lace came from my aunt Margaret Packe (nee Drake). She said that the older pieces came from her grandmother, Ellen Buchanan (nee Barwise) born 1868. This collar is too big to fit in my scanner (which is how I am reproducing the lace) so I can only show about half of it above (but the pattern repeats). The entire collar is photographed below to show its shape. |
