Description:
Follow the links above for explanation of how to work the different parts of the lace.
Start at the top of the antenae in cloth stitch - 3 pairs each (2 passives + 1 worker pair). Work each down go where they meet, then combine them, making one of the worker pairs into a passive pair. End at the bottom of the body.
The pattern is upside down, as the antennae of the butterfly are the last thing to be worked, and can be finished off with knots (since butterfly antennae often have knobs on the end).
There are 3 passive pairs in the body, worked as a cloth stitch strip, and a worker pair. These can be worked in a different colour, if you wish. The first or second row includes the start of 4 pairs for the left wings, and four pairs for the right wings. The wings are worked in plaits, crossing with lazy joins, and held in place with picots. The finish is at the head of the butterfly, with the 4 pairs of the body splits into 2 x 2 pairs to make the antennae.
