Solid areas are dense areas of lace, used as a contrast to the ground. Click here for different shapes available.
A solid area is worked in rows, with every stitch usually the same type. However, if the stitch is cloth stitch, it is possible to get an interesting effect by doing a few cloth stitch and twist stitches. This example creates a horizontal line. See pattern 451.

Working: Work the top half of the diamond, in cloth stitch.
Twist the passive pairs in the middle of thhe row. Leave the first few and last few untwisted. Work these first few in cloth stitch, twist the worker pair, then work all the twisted pairs in cloth stitch and twist. Finish off the row in cloth stitch.
Work the bottom half of the diamond in cloth stitch only.
