Effects within solid areas - vertical twists

Solid areas are dense areas of lace, used as a contrast to the ground. Click here for different shapes available.

A solid area is worked in rows, with every stitch usually the same type. However, if the stitch is cloth stitch, it is possible to get an interesting effect by doing a few cloth stitch and twist stitches. This example creates a vertical line. See pattern 451.

Vertical twists

Working: Work a few rows at the top of the diamond, in cloth stitch. Twist the middle passive pair.

Now work the first half of the middle row in cloth stitch, up to, but not including, the middle passive. Twist the worker pair. Work this, and the middle passive pair in cloth stitch and twist. Work the rest of the row in cloth stitch. Continue doing the same for most of the rest of the diamond, down to the last few rows.

Work the last few rows in cloth stitch only.
