The Blue Lias clay is very soft. It exists at Lyme Regis on the south coast of England and Whitby in Yorkshire. Both places are very good for fossils, such as ammonites and belemnites. Each of the specimens in the photoabove has a fossil in. The Blue Lias was a bed of clay which preserved the sea creatures' shells until they fossilised.

This specimen comes from Lyme Regis. This is a small fossil shell in it.
This specimen comes from Whitby. I think the fossil is a bit of an ammonite.
Just to show not all Blue Lias contains fossils! This specimen also comes from Whitby.
