| Name: | Cornelian or carnelian |
| Derivation: | There are various suggestions for its derivation: From "cornu" (Latin) a horn From "cornum" (Latin) cherry From "carnis" (Latin) flesh or meat |
| Description: | Translucent and orange |
The red colour comes from iron. There is a confusion both with the name, and the derivation. Since the colour can vary from yellow to almost red, perhaps people invented some of the names. I think that the idea of translucent horn gives the best idea of colour, much better than meat!
