Description: The photograph on the right shows a single crystal, which is basically a cube, although this one is imcomplete. The other photograph shows lots of crystals jumbled together. Halite is transparent or translucent.

Halite is also called Rock Salt. The white crystal was collected from a salt mine in Germany.

Salt has always been important, since the human body needs salt to survive (although too much salt is bad for you). The word "salary" comes from salt, since Roman soldiers was paid in salt.
