Name:Kunzite
Derivation:After George F Kunz (US geologist)
Formula: LiAlSi2O6
Description: Whitish crystal, sometimes looking pink (see below).

Kunzite is an important ore of lithium, which is used in batteries. There is a lithium compound which is used as an anti-depressant.

Kunzite is dichromatic, which means that it shows different colours if you look at it in different directions. These two specimens are the same, looked at from different angles. The photograph on the right, above, shows the kunzite looking grey from the side, but pink at the end.

Kunzite is pink. The mineral is usually white or grey and is called Spodumene. The green transparent form of Spodumene is called Hiddenite.

This specimen with the light on its side shows mostly grey (although it is a bit pink because of imperfections).

Kunzite

The same specimen with light shining through it is much pinker.

Kunzite

This specimen is clear and transparent, but the ends show pink as the light is coming from a different direction.

Kunzite

Kunzite is a pink form of Spodumene. This is a clear specimen of Spodumene.

Spodumene

Hiddenite is the transparent green form of Spodumene.
