The pattern book (published in 1587) describes this as Bacchus, representing autumn. Bacchus is the god of wine. He represents autumn because the vines is harvested then, and the grapes pressed to make wine. He is sitting on a wine barrel and surrounded by vines and grapes. The original is black and white.
