Michael Edkins was born around 1734 and apprenticed in Birmingham but left for Bristol sometime prior to 1750 without completing his articles. He worked as a craftsman painter for a number of years and married Betty James on 2 April 1755. They had a large number of children (records vary between 26 and 32) though it is unknown how many reached maturity.
For a time he painted delftware, porcelain and glass but then moved on the do heraldic work and a coach painter.
He was responsible for the interior decorations of the Theatre Royal in Bristol and also became an actor/singer working in Bristol and London.
In the Bristol Library there is the Michael Edkins Ledger which gives details of work he undertook over a number of years.
He died on 27 July 1811.
His Grandson William Edkins in 1887 donated to the nation 2 identical delft plates dated 1760 as well as a number of pieces of Bristol Glass also attributed to him. One plate is owned by the British Museum, the other by the Victoria and Albert.
There is a possibility that some of Michael Edkins work was destroyed in the fire at the Crystal Palace in 1936.
