Making an Android app - First things first

I set myself a specific task, to write apps for my own Fire Kindle, and possibly to upload them into a relevant app store. I do not intend to monetise the apps in any way - they will be free and have no ads. This is just a hobby. Also, I do not intend to use any 'clever' stuff in the device, like GPS or accelerometer. I am writing simple apps doing simple stuff - rather like one of my websites. So this description will be quite stripped down.

If you want to write an app, then I think you will need some programming ability and experience, plus some technical expertise. You will also need to do various actions before you start. This includes downloading the necessary software. Please note that this is SERIOUS software. It won't work on tablets. You download it to your desktop, or serious laptop (i.e. not mine, which uses Windows RT). You write the app there, and transfer it to your device (such as a Fire Kindle) to run.

You will need to:
  • Download Java software - Android apps are written in Java

  • Learn to code in Java - This programming language was derived from C++. It has some similarity to JavaScript (and important differences, she adds feelingly!) If you don't know the language, I strongly advise that you look at this tutorial. I gave the tutorial up after a bit, but what I read was useful.

  • Download AndroidStudio software - this is where you will write the app

  • Download Windows USB Driver software - this is needed to get the app to the Fire Kindle

  • Tell Kindle to accept Andoid debugging (see this webpage) - - it varies with Kindle generation!

  • Tell Windows to use the right USB driver (see this webpage)

  • Learn how to use Android Studio - I user THREE tutorials - each of which helped, but also were unhelpful in some ways: and if another tutorial tells me how to produce an app which says "Hello World" I think I will scream...

For the software downloading, see this webpage which might help. To tell the truth all this sofware downloading was done by my technical support (otherwise known as my husband.) I had to learn Java and AndroidStudio for myself, though. (He helped.)
