Honiton lace - collar

This collar was bought on eBay. The seller's description was "Antique Honiton lace collar with all over designs. Maximum width 35 cm (13¾ ins). Maximum depth 41 cm (16¼ ins)." This is very late 19th c. Honiton. This is the type sometimes referred to as 'slugs and snails' Honiton. There was a period when the motifs became shapeless little bits, as the lace industry declined.

There are rose motifs similar to the single motif, but simpler, as the petals and other shapes are only made of cloth stitch. I can find one area of half stitch. They are surrounded with gimps. The centres have one or more tallies. The motifs are joined with legs decorated with picots.

This collar is too big to fit in my scanner (which is how I am reproducing the lace) so I can only show parts of it on the right, and in large scale. The entire collar is photographed below to show its shape. On the right, there is most of one of the arms, and the point.
