Mixed tape lace - mat

This is mixed tape lace, because the tape was originally straight, then folded or gathered to make these shapes. The fillings and joins were added afterwards.

This is the first piece in my lace collection. My family visted Bruges around 1958 when I was 5 years old. We watched a bobbin lacemaker, and I was fascinated. So my mother bought this hankerchief from her for me. Unfortunately, I suspect that the tape in this lace is machine-made!
