Honiton shape

This is a strange shape. It is sewn onto some netting, but the lace piece is not flat, it has a slight conical shape to it. It was made like that - there is no seam. There is only one, or it could make a very old-fashioned cuff! I wonder if it is intended to be the edge to a lamp shade?

There are rose motifs similar to the single motif, but simpler, as the petals and other shapes are only made of cloth stitch. They are surrounded with gimps. The centres have one or more tallies. The motifs are joined with legs decorated with picots.

This lace came from my grandmother, Violet Dibblee (nee Geddes) 1871-1961.

This piece is too big to fit in my scanner (which is how I am reproducing the lace) so I can only show parts of it on the right, and in large scale. The entire piece is photographed below to show its shape. On the right, there is part of it. The pattern seems repetitive.
