Bias ground

Torchon bias ground

This is called a ground, which is normally an open part of lace. However, this is made up of thin strips, which are solid areas. The Dutch for this ground is Streepvierge. See pattern 231 or pattern 20.

I am not sure what the traditional pattern is. I prefer to mark out exactly where the strips go. The strips may travel in the opposite direction.

There is not really a unit of bias ground, like other grounds. Instead, you work one strip at a time. The strips may be cloth stitch or half stitch. In the diagram below, each pair is shown by a single line.

Working: Start at the top. Work one strip at a time, as marked by the pattern. Remember to twist the pairs as they leave the strip before entering the next. It may be best to twist them more than once, to make the strips more distinct.
