Headside pattern

There is a trail running underneath the headside which is essential to it. Pairs keep leaving the headside to be hidden in the trail, or leaving the trail to rejoin the headside.

The headside itself has two worker pairs (blue and pink). The pink pair works to left and right, in cloth stitch and twist, through the inner two passive pairs of the headside. The rest of the time, this pink pair is workers for the trail. The blue pair are workers for the outer passives of the headside. They vary between working (still in cloth stitch and twist) through two and three passive pairs. See enlarged pattern above, for details. The blue pair in the diagram have arrows on to show which direction they are moving in. I have not done this for the pink pair as the diagram would start to get messy! I hope that it is obvious.

See also pattern 83 for a 19C pattern which has a similar look, but does it in an entirely different way!
