Pattern of lace

The start is along a diagonal (although it looks horizontal above!), so one pair starts at each pin, and two at the edge. Above, I have marked the position of the false pins.

The name of this pattern "Squaring of the circle" refers to a concept in formal Euclidean geometry - to construct a circle and square of the same area using only straight edge and compasses. This is impossible! This pattern is really nothing to do with that. But it is a circle, yet it is made the same way as a square mat would be. The grid which enables this distorts all the shapes within to give them slightly curved lines instead of straight.
