Description:
Click on the links above to see how to do the different stitches and techniques. The red diamonds are cloth stitch and the blue is half stitch.
It is surprisingly easy to do these half and half diamonds. You start with cloth stitch until you get half way through the diamond. Then, for the next row, you switch to half stitch. Since it uses half stitch, it does, of course, muddle up the pairs.
You could work this in different ways. Perhaps alternate diamonds could have the cloth stitch and half stitch reversed. Or the first couple are the same way round, the middle one entirely half stitch, then the others reverse. Perhaps you can think of others! (You may need to write your idea on the pattern, so you don't get confused when working it - perhaps mark the half stitch bits with H.)

Below is a piece of (professionally made) lace in my lace collection. It is identical to the pattern above, except the diamonds are bigger. They have 6 pin holes along an edge rather than 4. So this pattern would use 16 pairs rather than 10.
