The pattern starts and ends with a little Torchon ground. Designs like spiders and fans are large, and tend to make for jagged starts and finishes. You can always use Torchon ground to fill this in, or indeed any other inconvenient "gaps" in the pattern. Since you are following someone else's design, this type of detail might not interest you, but I am explaining why I did it, and you never know - you might want to design lace for yourself one day!
