Nuw Modelbuch is a Swiss bobbin lace pattern book, dated 1561. The first page is given below, with a typical pattern page. The German may be translated roughly as follows:
|
New Pattern-book of all kinds of lace-lace as at this time in high Germany (fashionable?) are to instruct your apprentices and all other lace-workers at Zurich and wherever they are. Now newly prepared and for the first time in print (produced?) by R. M. |
The full book may be found online here. I've tried making the last pattern - see pattern 335. The German there says: "Rose pattern patterned in squares with 40". There are, indeed, 20 pairs (40 bobbins), and it uses rose ground!
