Trailer - Local Elections June 2009

Elections were held on Thursday 4th June 2009 in 34 English Local Authorities (the date was moved from May to coincide with the European Parliamentary Elections.) This is essentially a County Council year, but among Unitary Authorities the Isle of Wight has the nature of a county; Bristol has been permanently placed on a unique electoral cycle omitting years divisible by 4; and 5 new Unitary Authorities hold their first elections.

This page reflects local government restructuring proposals for Bedfordshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Durham, Northumberland, Shropshire & Wiltshire which will be implemented on 1 April 2009. Durham and Northumberland held elections in 2008 under these proposals, and like Cornwall, Shropshire & Wiltshire will become Unitary Authorities; Bedfordshire and Cheshire County Councils will be abolished, each being divided into 2 Unitary Authorities.

Links are to Electoral Change Orders where new division boundaries are being implemented, those marked * make only limited changes in single districts.
