This pattern compares the five different types of open spiders, pea and join. They are in order top to bottom (or in the photo, left to right) simple open spider, open spider with square hole, pea, German spider and join - variable pairs. I'm not sure if I have the German spider correct. The join has a hole in the middle - this is difficult to tighten, as most of the pairs pull apart, and it's only the middle pairs encircling them which pull the others together, and they don't make a good job of it! The pea is probably the best, which is irritating, as it's the hardest to do.
