This is a pattern of my own, inspired by mundillo, or lace from Panama. Click here for mundillo patterns.

These patterns are large scale, to show where the colours go. Reduce the pattern size, if you wish.

Description:

Follow the links above for explanation of how to work the different parts of the lace.

This pattern is partly wiggly lace and partly working a cross from the end of an arm.

The pattern starts at the bottom of the 'J'. The pattern then works up the letter, turning the pillow as necessary. At the top stroke of the letter, the bobbins divide into two, with half turning left and the other half turning right. This is not enough for work the pattern, so another ten pairs need to be added, half going left and half right. At this point, 20 pairs of bobbins are involved, although the pattern only starts with 10 pairs. Since you work half of the top before the other half, then you may be able to get away with 15 pairs, and reuse 5 pairs after finish off that part, but you'd need to know what you were doing.

I suggest that this is not a pattern for a beginner!

By the way, this was designed for a friend, Jeannine Pitas. It celebrates Marosa di Giorgio, a poet from Uraguay, whose poems talked of butterflies (among other things). My friend has translated her poems. The fans are supposed to be butterflies.
