Description:
Follow the links above for explanation of how to work the different parts of the lace.
I have called this "Try out new ground" because I was experimenting with a new pattern of stitches. I saw this originally on a Torchon grid, but I think it works better on a Bucks Point grid. I have tried this out already on pattern 299, where I worked it all in half stitch and twist. Here I wanted to explore whether it would be better to use different stitches. So there are four areas, each worked in a different way.
The basic pattern is a collection of stars with other stitches filling in the gaps. The top section (as worked - it is on the left of the photo) is entirely worked in half stitch and twist, pin half stitch and twist - the stitch used in honeycomb. This is marked all green in the pattern.
The second section has the stars in the patter worked as half stitch, pin, half stitch, which is how Kat stitch is worked. These are dark grey. The 'filler' stitches are green, because they are worked in half stitch and twist, pin, half stitch and twist.
The third section reverses this, so the stars are half stitch and twist, pin, half stitch and twist (green) and the fillers are half stitch, pin, half stitch (dark grey).
The last section is all dark grey, as everything is worked in half stitch, pin, half stitch.
It can be a little tricky to work, as you have to figure out which stitch to do where! If the colours aren't clear enough to help you, it might be worth drawing little circles round the 'filler' stitches in the middle two sections, to remind you to work them a different stitch to the rest. I haven't put that on the pattern, as it tends to obscure the lines and the pin holes.
As for which one is best - I'm not sure! You may feel that they are very similar to each other. I think that the half stitch, pin, half stitch for the stars makes the points of the stars a little sloppy, so I prefer either all half stitch and twist, pin, half stitch and twist (top section) or the third section, where the stars are half stitch and twist, pin, half stitch and twist and only the fillers are half stitch, pin, half stitch.
