The tricky part is when the trails split, working out how many in each half! There are a LOT of pairs being worked in cloth stitch or half stitch between the grounds.
I made this pattern in the style of a piece of lace (see below) in the Norris Museum in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. This used to be a lacemaking area.

There is another version of this pattern here. This page shows my second attempt. I didn't like the large number of pairs in the small area between the framed diamonds in the original. I also binned the tallies at the same time!
