This is a sampler of several different grounds that you might meet in Torchon lace. The grounds in the centre have a basic unit of 3x3. You can adapt the pattern as you choose, by replacing one ground with another, or even doing all the same, to give you a lot of practise!

Description:
Follow the links above for explanation of how to work the different parts of the lace.
All these grounds are surrounded by line of Torchon ground. I have made these a different colour, to make it easier to see what's going on. There are double Torchon ground stitches to make these coloured pairs change direction.
The star ground requires these surrounding lines to make it work. The rose and spider ground look different with these separating lines. I've also done the same for the cane ground and triangle ground, but there isn't a specific page describing these. Still, I think by this point you'll understand what's going on.
I've done the star ground wrong! There should be twists after the ground, before entering the line of Torchon ground (bother!)
The ground at top, sides and bottom is twisted hole ground, which has a distinct hole where the pin is. If you prefer, you can make it ordinary Torchon ground or double Torchon ground.
I have done a pseudo footside at the top to give a firm edge. If you prefer, you can ignore this and do a simple start:
