The most important property of a mineral used for jewelry is that it looks attractive. However, that isn't the only property (see dioptase, a very attractive mineral). Of course, it is excellent if the stone or metal is rare, as that addds to the cost, and therefore the status! Another important quality is hardness, since stones in rings or brooches will get damaged otherwise. Some stones have been popular since ancient times. Others occur in books.

Don't expect these specimens to be of high quality. For some reason, large gemstones of good colour, without flaws, are not sold cheaply at rock shops!
